Keeping Your Dog Cool in A Heat Wave

As temperatures rise during the summer months, it’s important for dog owners to take extra care to keep their pets safe and comfortable. Dogs can quickly become overheated because they cannot sweat like humans do. Instead, they rely mainly on panting to cool themselves down, which is not always enough during extreme heat. Heatstroke can be dangerous and even life-threatening, so prevention is essential.

One of the best ways to keep dogs cool is to ensure they always have access to fresh, clean water. Hydration is vital, especially after exercise or time spent outdoors.

Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day, usually between late morning and early evening. Early morning or evening walks are much safer and more comfortable. Hot pavements can also burn a dog’s paws, so it’s worth checking the ground temperature before heading outside.

Providing shaded areas in the garden or using cooling mats indoors can help dogs stay comfortable. Some owners also use damp towels, paddling pools, or pet-safe cooling vests to help lower body temperature. Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise rapidly and become fatal.

It’s also important to recognise the signs of overheating. Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or confusion may indicate heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If this happens, move the dog to a cool area immediately, offer water, and contact a vet as soon as possible.

By taking simple precautions, owners can help their dogs enjoy the summer safely and happily.
